steve,

Very nice find.....Wendell for you.

Someone is picking up the fingerprint end of this deal. Jeesh, I could have sworn this would be the Unisys part of the contract....or at least part of the role that Unisys plays. Marpless and Unisys won the deal....and the deal is being done......and there has been no change in the winners of the project....as far as I know.

I do know that IDX has supplied equipment for a remote banking project in South Africa.......But really have heard very little about Hanis.....until the two posts you posted. Now it would seem it's going in now.....with chip smart cards to follow.

This project is now close to $1 billion US?.......Yikes!

Thanks for keeping an eye on it......it is the largest biometric project in the world.....and therefore is very important. Since China and Brazil are just down the road, not to mention the GSA smart card.....Hanis is huge....any way you slice it. First in, leg up......all that stuff. It would be very nice if IDX were there....with Unisys.

steve,

Here is the text from the link to HANIS;

IDENTITY-SMARTCARD
GOVT LAUNCHES R800M ID SYSTEM
PRETORIA 31 January 2000 Sapa
The new R800 million Home Affairs National Identification System (Hanis) was launched in Pretoria on Monday, SABC television news reported.

Speaking at the launch, Home Affairs Minister Mangosuthu Buthelezi said the new system, which used "smart cards" to store information, would eliminate the fraudulent use of identity documents.

The first batch of identity cards are expected to be issued free of charge to the public in September next year.

It is not yet clear whether the Hanis smart cards will include driver's licence details in its information system since the driver's licence card system was set up only two years ago, at a cost of R100 million.

The Department of Home Affairs and Hanis' suppliers will load more than 40 million fingerprints onto a data base, making it the biggest of its kind in the world.

It looks like a very big project. Would like to confirm the contractors/suppliers involved and any IDX relationships. Any links to the contract specifications and award announcement?
