New Cable Modem Order Expands Com21's Presence in Canada; Westman Communications Group Selects Standards-Based DOXport 1010

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 2000--Com21, Inc. (Nasdaq:CMTO), the third largest global supplier of system solutions for the broadband access market, today announced that it has received an initial order from Westman Communications Group of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada for its DOXport(TM) 1010 data over cable services interface specification (DOCSIS) cable modems. With this new order and new customer, Com21 expands its presence in Canada and brings its total number of North American MSOs (Multiple System Operators) to approximately 40. To date, Com21 has shipped nearly 370,000 cable modems worldwide, including both proprietary and DOCSIS-compliant products.

This new order represents Westman's first-phase replacement of competitive proprietary cable modems, installed in 1998, with Com21's CableLabs(R) Certified(TM) DOXport 1010 cable modems. In the first half of 2000, the Canadian cable MSO plans to extend deployment of the DOXport 1010 cable modems to three additional Canadian communities through the use of its fiber interconnection.

"Making the transition from proprietary to DOCSIS certified technology is important at this time," said David Baxter, president and chief executive officer of Westman Communications Group. "In addition to offering improved reliability and system management capabilities, the DOCSIS standard also provides a platform to support the future applications that we plan to introduce," added Baxter.

The Com21 DOXport 1010 cable modem is fully compliant with the North American DOCSIS 1.0 standard and is one of two DOXport modems to receive CableLabs(R) Certified(TM) Status. With superior RF performance, the DOXport 1010 also enables MSO's with the ability to monitor input power (RF dBmv) levels for plant status monitoring.

"We are pleased to expand Com21's footprint in the Canadian market," said Peter Fenner, president and chief executive officer of Com21. "We are also delighted to win a new customer with such a strong focus on technology leadership. Implementation of DOCSIS-certified technology from Com21 will enable Westman to deliver important existing and future broadband applications."

Westman is currently offering digital cable services and is participating in an application with the Canadian government's Smart Communities Demonstration Project, a program developed to introduce new communications technologies across Canada.
