Dan - <There have been comments from Intel that their problem was equipment availability, not FAB space. Has this changed? >

Must need both. With Intel's flash business expanding, CPU demand robust, and F16 on indefinite hold, I was actually wondering if Intel would need more space, even with the announcement of F22. I think this is a good thing.

However, you do bring up a good point. The industry is currently in a capacity building cycle, with DRAM manufactures reportedly scrambling to bring fairly large amounts of capacity online. I would surmise that equipment delivery is at a premium. With Intel bringing one more fab online, the current situation will only be exacerbated. Probably one motivation for Splinter to extol the virtues of timeliness to the equipment makers last month in Pebble Beach.

Intel needs new fabs in which to put in that new equipment - in order to EXPAND production.

Intel's comments about equipment were, I recall, concerned with lead times and development times of new equipment.

Either way, Intel needs additional capacity - and with the purchase of a partially completed new fab, equipment availability (after facilities are installed) will be the gating item.

I guess hiring a good staff and training them in existing fabs will also be a gating item. Copy Exactly will play an important functionin bringing up the new fab on schedule.

Dan3, When Grove goes skiing he often laments the lack of a good indoor driving range. Now he will have some space, at least until they get some equipment installed, just in time for the great fab glut of 2002-3

Dan,
re:"If it hasn't changed, what good is another building?"

If it takes a women 9 months to have a baby, *ntel would get nine women and think they could do it in a month.

There have been comments from Intel that their problem was equipment availability, not FAB space. Has this changed?

If it hasn't changed, what good is another building?

I guess you don't understand, Dan. Intel finally decided they have to plan for the future to avoid scenarios like the current shortages. Unfortunately all this new fab space will probably come online just as the next semi downturn occurs.
