Why would you get the inferior Coppermine when you can get an Athlon for the same or less?

I don't think Coppermine is inferior in business apps. They are about the same performance-wise at the same clock speed, with Athlon leading slightly on the price front, and hugely in availability.

But I need some of the workstations I need have to be NLX (slim desktop case because of lack of space), and there aren't any Athlon NLX motherboards available.

For the servers, I want to have an option to replace a motherboard add a 2nd CPU and keep the first one, in case I need more performance the future.

Overall, I am very receptive to CPU's from alternative vendors (and now for almost a week an AMD shareholder), but my experience shows that Athlon still has a lot of challenges to overcome (and opportunities). The supporting infrastructure is still developing.

But with Athlon already proven, AMD has a viable architecture for long term, and a great opportunity in the short term to capitalize on Intel weakness.
