Richard,
I was referring to the chip industry as a whole, not equip
mfg's. I believe you are correct though. AMAT had layoffs
in July-Aug 98 and orders started increasing by Oct-Nov but
AMAT thought that it was a bubble and maintained a "wait and
see" approach as the semis started to ramp. Thank you for
correcting me. So yes we are about 15 months into the
up cycle and IMO we have peaked or are very near to the
peak for this cycle. If the B2B starts trending down that
will be a confirmation, IMO. Maybe the chip sector will
do what it did in spring/summer of '96, but then again the
rest of the world economy appears to be recovering nicely
so nothing is absolute.
