CITIC Pacific up on alliance speculation
HONG KONG, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Shares of China-backed CITIC Pacific rose sharply on Wednesday on market talk it would form a joint venture with a U.S.-based technology company.

The stock rose HK$1.60 or 4.6 percent to HK$36.70 after hitting a high of HK$37.90 on moderate turnover.

``The latest rumour is they're about to set up a joint venture with Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU - news) for the development of their fibre optic trunk network in China,' an analyst said.

``My understanding is 'joint venture' may be too strong a word to use,' he added.

A deal between the two companies could be similar to the arrangements between U.S. carriers and their telephone service customers, such as MCI WorldCom Inc (NasdaqNM:WCOM - news) and AT&T Corp (NYSE:T - news), he said.

Haven't had time to post in quite awhile. LU at this price still equates to over 90/per ASND. Don't think many ASND'ers are hurting. One "minor" bump and down we go.... We will be back----one quarter at a time.
