(This post may appear twice. The gremlins are at it again.)

Lindy,

For the 9 months ended 10/01/99, net sales totalled$120.8M, up from $56.8M. Net income totalled
$12.9Mvs. a loss of $22.1M. (italic's added)

This does not seem to match your numbers??

I didn't try to verify the previous numbers, but those current sales and profit numbers do indeed match Eric's numbers exactly.

Well, after lingering on the thread for the last couple of weeks, I popped by the bookstore (one of the only English one's here in Taipei), and bought TFM after reading through the first chapter.

I have to say, the first chapter was a good introduction and I'm really looking forward to delving into the rest of it. I'd heard alot about these strange, ape-like creatures that you all speak so fondly of which is what prompted me to start following this thread. Hopefully I can begin contributing to the discussion once I've read through the manual and digested it a bit.

Cheers,

-sm-

Lindy, I think you guys should spend a bit more time on the Divicom merger with re to HLIT.
divi.com
It has been my opinion and others that Divicom is what supported CUBE's latest growth, soon to be a bonus for HLIT.

IMO it will take a Qtr or two to see how these numbers stack up after HLIT/Divicom mesh. Could be impressive.

DiviCom© Wins Head-End Deployment for First Digital MMDS Television System in China

SZBTC Selects Leading Digital Video Open Solutions Provider

Milpitas, Calif. - December 21, 1999 - DiviCom, a Division of C-Cube Microsystems (Nasdaq: CUBE), and the world's leading provider of open solutions for digital television, today announced its deployment of solutions for China's first digital multi-channel/multi-point distribution system (MMDS) head-end at the Shenzhen Broadcast Transmission Center (SZBTC).

The wireless cable provider deployed DiviCom's open solutions-based MPEG-2 encoding system to convert quickly from analog to digital for delivering services in and around Shenzen. The system, deployed in the fastest-growing economic zone in China under Beijing's policy for economic reform, will also allow SZBTC to use two more of its analog channels for datacasting and interactive Internet Service Protocol (ISP) services.

DiviCom partnered with conditional access system and set-top box vendors to supply its MediaViewTM MPEG-2 encoders and complete system integration services to increase SZBTC's channel count from four to 23 channels of digital MMDS service.

"We selected DiviCom for its superb video and audio quality, superior system-integration experience and support, and most of all for its flexible solution, which will enable us to plan for future expansion while preserving our current investment," said Mr. Fu Feng Chun, SZBTC's Chief Engineer and Deputy Director.

"Since we wanted to offer new levels of service to our subscribers, expand the number of channels, and be prepared for increased competition as our economy continues to grow, we ranked interoperability and flexibility as key features, particularly since we needed to meet international broadcast standards," Mr. Fu said. "DiviCom's open systems-based solution allows us to choose the best upgrades and new features. In addition, with the system's expandability, we can now move into new markets whenever and wherever they evolve."

"SZBTC is committed to leading in the delivery of digital television service," said Tom Lookabaugh, President of DiviCom. "DiviCom open solutions are designed to provide the capability needed for today with the ability to adapt to rapidly changing market requirements."

SZBTC's system includes the following DiviCom solutions:

The DiviCom MediaViewTM MV12 Encoder: SZBTC deployed MediaView MV12 standard definition encoders, which offer superior video compression efficiency in a cost-effective package.
The THESYSTM Integrated Network Management Solution: This modular suite of user-friendly software packages provides integrated, advanced element and network management.
The MediaNodeTM MN20 Multiplexer: The core of the digital cable head-end system, the MN20 not only combines and grooms broadcast audio, video, and associated data programming, but supports DVB and DES scrambling.

RE: HLIT

LindyBill, as Mike pointed out, the numbers for 1999 match my numbers. What might be throwing you off is that they had a loss of $22.1 million for the first three quarters of 1998. I didn't mention this in my write up. This was caused by two things: (1) there were some one-time charges associated with the purchase of New Media Communications; and (2) there was a period in early 1998 where TCI turned the spigot off while they reevaluated their upgrade plan. Since TCI was their largest customer, it had an effect. Although revenues remained relatively flat for three quarters (they didn't go down significantly), gross margins went from 46% in 4Q97 to 31% in the 1Q98 due to the shift in product mix and less throughput. This is a potential problem when you are fairly dependent on a single customer, and a problem they are still exposed to with T representing 40% of their sales.
