ERICSSON SHARES SURGE ON QUALCOMM DEAL Wednesday February 2, 6:35 am Eastern Time
Ericsson shares surge seven pct on Qualcomm deal
STOCKHOLM, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Shares in Swedish telecoms group Ericsson surged seven percent on Wednesday after rallying on Tuesday, boosted after U.S. mobile phone technology company Qualcomm (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) said it was jointly developing a wireless appliance system.

By 1125 GMT Ericsson shares were 7.4 percent higher at 710 crowns, off an earlier record of 714 crowns in a bullish market.

``Ericsson's gaining on the Qualcomm news. They're developing wireless systems with Qualcomm,' one broker said. ``Generally Ericsson's got the wind in its back, with foreigners weighing into Ericsson. There's a lot of hype in the sector at the moment. A lot is happening.'

Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, the world's largest maker of mobile systems, saw its shares surge some seven percent on Tuesday after rival Nokia posted record 1999 earnings and Erisson won a $850 million GSM order from Turkey's Turkcell.

QUALCOMM's SNAPTRACT deal will no doubt boost future sales as carriers will want to employ yet more services that will offer location and position, traffic reports, driving conditions and directions.More E Commerce could be delivered to the handset as well. The acquisition is a brilliant move as it furthers QUALCOMM's IPR position to lock in the best of features to there chip technology. This type of integration of QUALCOMM's CDMA chip will offer even more of a competitive situation for the company and put pressure on those CDMA phone makers not yet using QCOM's chips to do so.Now QUALCOMM and Ericsson will be working together on Bluetooth which makes perfect sense to even further that type of CDMA intergation.INMHO
