Vodafone peaks amid rush to up weightings
LONDON (Reuters) - Shares in Vodafone Airtouch Plc (LSE: VOD.L - news) have surged to a fresh record high as investors pile in to the stock, driven by the need to raise weightings ahead of expected success in its bid for Mannesmann .

The stock rose 6.5 percent or 23-1/2 pence to 383-1/2 pence by 1052 GMT with more than 200 million shares changing hands. It hit a new all-time high of 387p earlier.

"They've got to get their weightings up. The feeling is that they are definitely going to get Mannesmann now and particularly with BT so weak, they are piling in to Vodafone. There's just massive buying in the stock," said one senior equity salesman.

Mannesmann rose 13.6 euros (8.21 pounds) to 309.9 euros (187.18 pounds), having hit a lifetime high of 312 euros (188.35 pounds) earlier.

Meanwhile British Telecommunications Plc dropped 20 percent with more that 100 million shares traded after bearish trading news shocked the market. More than 15 billion pounds was wiped off BT's value.
