Good morning.....It may have been inevitable. The question is, was it realistic to think that matters could be forever compromised? Lincoln was not a fire- breather: he disapproved of John Brown and envisioned full emancipation at the turn of the century. He was also willing to entertain the idea of the resettlement of blacks, as in the Liberia venture. If one agrees that slavery could not go on forever, then reacting to his election with secession made it clear that compromise merely put off things off....
