A lot of cliches about Russia and Eastern Europe are thrown around. Even miserably poor countries have a small middle class that can afford cars, cell phones, PC's etc. That's true in Africa and also in Russia (the "kleptocracy"). The number can range from a few hundred thousand to a few million depending on the overall population. And they tend to be concentrated in the capital city, of course.

My landlords in Sarajevo are a lawyer and a car dealer with two very nice houses.

That said, I did no DD on ANDR and don't plan to. Those who shorted it high probably did naked shorts offshore that they can cover at a profit without ever actually borrowing.
