Wayne, you are right but you must think from a politicians perspective - they want maximum short term benefit and have little regard for the long term consequences much like the current bubble masters. From a political perspective it was brilliant. If you consider how many people have died due to the politicians wars it is not hard to imagine that they would allow the economy to be wrecked for short term gain. Mike ho ho ho

Wayne, I have mentioned it a few times. It is idiotic to borrow short to fund long term govt. spending. But Clinton and his gang of thieves want to be able to tell the ignorati that they have "reduced long term debt. Vote for Gore." <g> If we get inflation, it is deadly. If we get deflation, it won't mean much and may actually be a positive.
