CHINA: SECURITY AND VIDEO ON THE HANDSET Date: 2000-01-17 Source: IT Daily (Hong Kong) gprsworld.com Internet security developer RSA Security is working with Ericsson Mobile Communications to develop security solutions for Ericsson smartphones. As mobile phones are increasingly used to access the Internet, the need for a secure platform for phone based e-commerce becomes more apparent. Ericsson's forthcoming R380 smartphone which will feature authentication for secure corporate access. In other news Ericsson is working on e-mail technology for third generation (3G) wireless networks that supports video transmissions alongside regular e-mail. Known, appropriately enough, as video-mail, Ericsson says that it has been testing the technology at its UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications service) test centre in Guildford, England. Hakan Enquist, managing director of UMTS, said that the demonstrations took place over a WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) network. Enquist said that, after e-mail, fax-mail and voice-mail, video-mail is the next logical step. Video-mail is unsuited to mobile networks with their current data transmission limits of between 9,600 and 19,200 bps. However, the company predicts that when GPRS (general packet radio service) network facilities start arriving later this year, then video-mail will become a reality.
