Bob : Indeed. DeBeers has also approaching the US authorities to remove their persona non grata status within the US but apparently were rebuffed on their first attempt. I guess they must feel that 80% of the market is no longer a monopoly.

Re the lazer writing on the diamonds, they are also using that technique to identify the Millennium 2000 range and also the origin of the stones so as to avoid any charge that the source is Unita in Angola.
