Haim, I may be naive, but I believe the government's inflation figures. I don't think the government intentionally misleads the public. Sure, real estate has appreciated considerably recently, but on the other hand I find lots of quality products selling at prices considerably lower than a few years back. And some, like the wealth of information on the internet, are completely free. I used to pay hundreds of dollars a year for a charting service -- I get much better quality charting on the internet for free now. My video camera cost a fraction of what I would have paid a few years back, and its quality is much better. And so on.

For every example of a good or service whose price increased considerably, I can point out one whose price and quality decreased considerably. I simply don't buy the argument that there is a conspiracy to underestimate the CPI. In fact, I am pretty convinced that the opposite is true, at least for the kinds of goods and services that I am using.
