Haim, I am well aware of the "rent equivalent" calculation of housing. That's the way they have been doing it for ever. There is some justification for it though: 2/3 of Americans own their house already.

But, you know, they don't include in their basket so many other things that have gone down in price, or new things that did not even exist a few years back and whose price is free (like this e-mail).

I know new medicines are expensive. But some of them are life savers. The length and quality of life has increased considerably the last few years because of them. Guess what: there is no BLS measurement for that.
