Why? Because both had very controversial strategies at the time to those who don't understand how powerful monopolies are being built with the emergence of the internet and can't look past near-term net income. There are massive secular demographics in their favor and the best and the brightest in general figure out how to leverage their position once they reach scale. AOL took a while to reach scale (and some pain was felt along the way) and then the cash came pouring in. Its called innovation and AOL and AMZN are both focused and passionate innovators.
