IPOs To Go
By Matthew Goldstein

smartmoney.com

WHEN THREE BIG online brokerage firms announced a few months ago that they were building a new Web-based investment bank, one important thing was missing ? a name.

While not critical, the omission gave rise to some awkward descriptions for the unusual joint venture involving Charles Schwab (SCH), TD Waterhouse (TWE) and Ameritrade Holding (AMTD). Some Wall Street analysts and financial reporters started referring to the enterprise as "the bank with no name," or the "no-name investment bank" ? monikers with just a tinge of sarcasm.

Well, analysts and reporters need fumble no more over what to call the venture, which hopes eventually to sell shares in initial public offerings that it will underwrite to customers of the three brokerages. The official name for the still-in-utero institution is Epoch Capital Group. "An epoch is an extended period of time marked by a memorable series of events," says Scott Ryles, the investment bank's president and chief executive officer. "We chose the name because we believe we are in that new period of memorable events that's ushering in a new era of investment banking."
