China is making serious noises about joining the 21st century. However, putting in a traditional wireline communications infrastructure down to the last mile is time consuming and expensive. Wireless would allow them to leapfrog the copper and fiber infrastructure buildout.

i was surprised as well when i went to india to see people with cell phones while driving but in india the market is very small despite the large population becasue most cannot even afford it with monthly salaries of less than a hundred dollars considered good pay....
not enough to pay a cell phone bill on...
i'm sure same applies to china and most of its population...
