Qualcomm Sued by Former Workers Who Claim Age Discrimination

Los Angeles, Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm Inc., the best-
performing stock in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index last year, is
accused in a lawsuit of illegally firing workers, thus depriving
them of stock options, because of their age.

In a suit filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court, the four
plaintiffs, all over the age of 40 when they lost their jobs, say
they and other older workers were fired ''to facilitate the
company's desired youthful mind-set and employee makeup.''

The suit was brought by James Curley of Hemet, California;
Joseph Edwards of Valley Center, California; and Thomas Durante
and Curtis Parker, both of San Diego, where Qualcomm is based. The
suit seeks class-action status.

Qualcomm officials couldn't immediately be reached to
comment.

The suit seeks damages of more than $500 million, but asked
that the amount be doubled. It also seeks punitive damages to
punish Qualcomm and deter other companies from similar conduct.

Qualcomm, which makes cell phones and network equipment, said
in February of last year that it would fire about 700 employees,
or 6.3 percent of its workforce, to cut costs as it faces stiffer
competition.

Qualcomm rose 6 to 142 1/16.
