Sale of UK's gold set to continue

BY PAUL ARMSTRONG

THE Government has all but dashed hopes that it will abandon the second stage of its controversial gold reserves sale.
A Treasury spokesman said that the four auctions heldhad been "well covered" and would almost certainly be continued. "There has been no problem with the control of the auctions so there is no reason to think we would want to change it," he said.

The Government said last year that it would cut the UK's 715-tonne gold inventory by 415 tonnes. It is committed to selling 125 tonnes through a series of five auctions, the last of which is to be next month.

The Treasury said that it will decide how to sell the remaining 290 tonnes after that.
