jb - Am I missing something here? You sure are - what you're missing is the whole psychology of the consumer market, and the fact that DELL has only 1 credible consumer offering (the WebPC) which has made little impact in the consumer space. no one has addressed the CONFIGURATION of these "company supplied" computers,,, For the most part, the consumer PC market is closer to the consumer electronics market. Customers buy "the package". The configuration services that DELL offers corporate customers (which allow machines out of the box to match corporate standards, even including proprietary programs if desired) are of no benefit to consumers. The standard package is just fine... Hewlett-Packard provided computers are not going to be 500MHZ+/56K+ modems that most of us are using,,,, You should take a look at the HP Pavilion line - which outsells DELL 6 to 1 in the consumer space - if you think HP is producing some kind of obsolete clunkers. The weakest product in the lineup comes standard with 433MHz celeron, the same as WebPC, 56K modem, zip drive, 10GB hard drive, etc. all for less than $800... move up a notch in the line and you get 600MHz and 733 MHz products for not a lot more. UH OH!!! Who is going to pay for MAINTENANCE!?!?!!?? Don't tell me you get it all for $5 a month. HP's consumer product service is as good as anyones and users get 1 year free. The reality is that DELL does not have their consumer program together, does not have much of a product line, and has no presence in that business, and HP is the #2 vendor behind CPQ. DELL is not in the top 5. But you're entitled to your opinion I guess. everyone else in the business is a helpless dinosaur and there must have been some hanky panky, DELL could not have lost on the merits...
