People have been using dye, oil based paint, water based paint, egg tempera based paint, ink, just about anything you can think of for thousands of years. Think of the Lasceaux (sp?) caves, the ones with the naturalistic animal paintings. Think about paintings in Egyptian tombs. Roman murals. Ancient burials where the bodies were decorated with yellow ochre powder mixed with animal fat. Paint is just pigment mixed with a base, and whatever else the artist feels like throwing in, like wax, in the hope that it will last longer.
