BroadbandNOW Selects Nortel Networks to Deliver High-Speed Internet Access, High-Performance Internet Services to Three Million Residential Customers
BroadbandNOW to Implement Shasta 5000 Subscriber Service System to Provide Customized Broadband Content for Multiple Dwelling Unit (MDU) Residents in 60 Markets Updated 11:57 AM ET February 3, 2000
BOSTON, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE:NT) today announced that BroadbandNOW, a leading nationwide provider of high-speed, high-capacity Internet connectivity and customized broadband content and related services to residents of Multiple Dwelling Units (MDUs), has selected Nortel Networks' Shasta Subscriber Service System (SSS) to address the broadband Internet needs of MDUs in 60 key markets, totaling over three million subscribers.
"BroadbandNOW has chosen Nortel Networks to help us as we address the underserved needs of millions of apartment residents nationwide with secure, affordable high-speed Internet access and services," said Matthew Hutchins, president and CEO, BroadbandNOW, Inc.
"Not only will BroadbandNOW be able to connect subscribers' personal computers via broadband to our new, national, carrier class, private Internet Protocol (IP) network, but with the Shasta 5000 we can offer customizable services like firewalls based on each subscribers needs," Hutchins said. "Internal testing proved the Shasta 5000 BSN's value-added services and secure broadband features complement our BroadbandNOW! service."
"Nortel Networks is committed to providing service providers with carrier-class solutions for mass market service deployment, which requires that Nortel Networks' Shasta 5000 BSN offer more than a tactical solution for early market trials," said Anthony Alles, president and general manager, Nortel Networks Shasta IP Services business unit. "In targeting MDUs, a largely untapped portion of the overall mass market, BroadbandNOW plans to use the Shasta 5000 to be uniquely positioned to provide new value-added service offerings through high-speed, high-capacity Internet broadband services."
The Shasta 5000 BSN is designed to power the subscriber edge of the network, where last mile technologies like DSL meet the Internet backbone and where broadband subscribers will meet broadband services. The Shasta 5000 enables carriers, competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to increase their competitive advantage in transitioning from the simple connectivity model enabled by first generation subscriber management systems to a cost-effective, network-based, value-added services model.
The Shasta 5000 BSN enables the aggregation of tens of thousands of subscribers in a single chassis. Utilizing its unique multi-processor architecture with more than 100 CPUs, the Shasta 5000 also has the unparalleled processing power to apply sophisticated services to each individual subscriber. Internet services supported include network-based firewalling, traffic engineering and IP-VPN for secure corporate access and for intranet/extranet outsourcing - all provisioned by the service provider.
