JCP: J.C. Penney (JCP), based in Plano, Texas, posted a better-than-expected 6.1% increase in department same-store sales. Analysts had expected a 5% sales increase on heavy clearance activity. Total company sales increased 10.5% to $2.13 billion. Penney said department store sales for January rose 8.8% to $852 million from $783 million a year ago. Same-store sales for the Eckerd drugstores unit rose 5.2%, while total sales rose 15% to $967 million. Total catalog sales rose 0.9% to $218 million. Total direct marketing sales for January increased 5.6% to $95 million. smartmoney.com
