Slacker,

<< Have they managed to get around the problems that were previously reported with GPRS phones? >>

I don't think yet for production models. All I read seems to indicate we are looking at end of year or first of next for volume production of really functional handsets. I am sure we'll see some sort of kludges in limited quantity this summer.

I just spotted this below but I've got a bad link to the full text:

"Alcatel claims GPRS terminal leadership According to a senior figure from the French vendor, within weeks, Alcatel will launch a range of terminals that will set a new benchmark for 2.5G devices. This will include a GPRS terminal that will be available in volume quantities by the end of this year, months ahead of its competition, says Alcatel."

Also:

The ever charming and colorful (scourge of handsent vendors & GSM ZEALOT) George Schmitt of Omnipoint was quoted yesterday as saying:

"In another dig at the manufacturers, Schmitt modified his famous borrowed acronym 'God Send Mobiles'. He offered everyone the chance to take away a badge bearing the prayer: 'God Send GPRS Mobiles'."

As the author said:

Over the years, George Schmitt of US operator Omnipoint has built a reputation as one of the industry's most outspoken participants. Speaking yesterday, ten years after having first addressed a GSM World Congress audience, he was as forthright as ever.

Whether or not you actually agree with everything George Schmitt says, you have to enjoy watching him speak-there was certainly no-one asleep during his presentation.
