>>after comparing the prices at four different online retailers.... Now it's probably a mistake to extrapolate from me to the population at large, but still ... doesn't it give you pause?

Of course it gives me pause. Technology can make you obsolete rather quickly and the internet is, no doubt, a scary world.

That said, I take comfort when you have very bright people running the show and understand technology and the internet. I believe in Amazon's team. Amazon could very well end up going bankrupt because some automated comparison shopper bot ends up the killer app. However, I strongly doubt it - technology by itself rarely ever wins. Marketing wins. Brands win. The fact that there are too many internet companies is actually to Amazon's advantage as its just too expensive to get critical mass now. You have to have word of mouth marketing and Amazon has that momentum.

I don't care about saving a few dollars if I buy $50 worth of CD's. It just isn't that important to me.
