Windsock:

That Ford deal is pretty amazing. You can bet years 2 years ago that would not be part of any labor contract. A good sign for the whole industry that ford is taking this step..and that the employees want it and consider it of value!!

re: Ford plan

"Besides the base system, three upgrade models will be available for those willing to pay extra"

I wonder what cpu these 3 models feature. Since the employees can get a celeron 500 for $5 a month, I'm sure there will be many willing to pay $10 for an athlon 700 or so. Pretty nice perk, lets hope others follow suit.

RE:"AMD does have an inventory problem with the Athlon processor. Make a million in Q4 and end up with 40% of that in inventory."...

So you think AMD made a million Athlons and had 400k on hand at the end of the quarter? Check, it was a lot less than that.
Typically AMD has about 600K-1M chips on hand at the end of a quarter. I believe they had a lot less than that last Q. Any inventory they had is now gone. Motherboard shortages may have been responsible for what Athlons they did have.
I doubt very seriously that AMD has any excess inventory at this time, especially with Intel not being able to supply high speed coppermines. To think otherwise would be pure FUD-passing.

This is yet another reason Fords stock can't get off the ground...

Hi Windsock:

Re: "In the meantime, Ford announces a plan to provide to provide internet access for its employees using 300,000 HP PCs with Intel processors."

Comment: Sounds like a recipe for major staff morale problems not too far down the road for Ford employees! You know, saddling them with "second best"! No way to treat your staff!

Windstock Re <<AMD does have an inventory problem with the Athlon processor. Make a million in Q4 and end up with 40% of that in inventory.>>

Please tell me you are not clueless!

Re <<Ford announces a plan to provide to provide internet access for its employees using 300,000 HP PCs with Intel processors. >>

First of all a whole lot less than 300K will actually buy a Celeron 500 MHz. At most, this deal may boost INTC revenue by about 0.05% over the next year. Nice to see it made you excited.

Windsock, Does anyone know if the optional extra speed computers are of any kind? or are the limited to intel products? Can the Ford employees specify Athlon systems?
I am curious if Intel took part in this deal with some concessions?

Bill
