You do NOT have to buy the fuel cell!! The utility will!!
I would pay a premium NOT to have brown or black outs or surges in voltage! What would you pay to not harm the environment, and have pure power that is more stable than the grid, no wind or snow problems?

<<< As I understand it, Ballard has always been regarded as the undisputed leader in PEM fuel cell technology. If the residential fuel cell market is going to be so big, and a home unit need only be 7kw with no electric motor, then I would think that if Ballard can make a system fit in a car and have a low enough cost, why not go aggressively after the residential fuel cell market instead. >>>

Erik,
The prospectus from BLDP's recent sale of stock says that they plan their first "portable power products" in 2001, transit bus engines in 2002 and "stationary power products" between 2002 and 2003. I'm not sure why they chose to target vehicle applications more heavily than residential/stationary. Perhaps it is because the automakers have been more enthusiastic partners in supporting fuel cell development? Environmental regulation might be driving (pun intended) the automakers to move faster than electric utilities, so more research contracts have been available for vehicle fuel cell research than for stationary. I dunno, I'm just speculating.

I agree that BLDP could provide significant competition to PLUG in the not-too distant future. From the research I've done, BLDP seems to have good business momentum and a lot of partners. They're no gorilla, but I think they could be.

Peace
Mr Bones
