There are some songs which really shouldn't be recorded by others - this is one of them IMHO.

Gary - That is quite an interesting opinion. The older I get, the more I seem to appreciate the art of the song and what singers can do with it. Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, Lieber/Stoller, Lennon/McCartney, et al...
I can't imagine saying that about any of their songs.

Yet I've got to agree with you. I can't picture anyone improving on Don McLean's version - and in fact I can't find any clips of covers of it when I do a Song Search at CDNow. Except for a version by a group called "One by One".

I still haven't heard Madonna's take on it, but after all these glowing reviews, I can't wait.
