"Of course, Alcatel is an American company, but they face tough competition from such telecommunications equipment companies as the Lucents, Nortels, as well as from some of the much faster companies such as Cisco."

Steve and Dave- The story that trenzich posted was the one I was looking for. Thanks for looking it up. I knew I remembered something being strange about what the reporter wrote and I wanted to check on it. Apparently it is just a typo now that I read it again.

You see WS transcript stated, "Of course, Alcatel is an American company..." He clearly must have meant French or European. But the reporter got the fact right about Cisco being, "much faster." Because, as you may know, Cisco moved into the Asian markets right in the heart of the Asian crisis in mid-1997. Cisco has never regretted the move since. Alcatel, IMHO, just moving into Asia now is on the late side.

From what I see, it's the telco space that is of most important to them. But then again, I don't know what they drop into their different categories? Because they broke out Enterprise and Consumer in a separate division. Quite confusing. So I'm lost on that one. I noticed they have a nice presentation on their website that will probably clear up my confusion and I need to read their earnings press release in better detail. I hope they don't try to compete with Cisco in the enterprise space because Cisco cleans house against it's competitors there.

They are somewhat like Nortel but Alcatel seems to be much more into access technologies. IMHO, that is a very nice place to be as I think the last mile is where the most money will be spent in near term upgrades. But again, I need to go through and verify this. I just know how they do lead in DSL and I know they are positioned very nicely in LMDS. So I figure they must focus on this quite a bit. That's kind of what I'm hoping. But I'm so ignorant about ALA that I don't even know if they have a product that competes with Lucent's big old 5ESS circuit-switches made for the telcos.

It sure would be nice if they either sold off or spun off the non-telecommunications related aspects of their business. Most investors think of Alcatel as a large company into a lot of things. I'm sure this is partly why their stock price is always under pressure as compared to the pure play telecommunications infrastructure companies. But this is probably obvious to their CEO but may not be so easy to do in France.

As far as my first question about a live phone in CC or presentation about their convergence plans, I found it at: biz.yahoo.com
It's too bad it's already over and was only available for 48 hours after broadcast. Those types of CCs are IMHO, very important because they lay out their strategy for how they plan to position themselves to get into the all important voice-data convergence market. Hopefully one can dig it up on their website. Their Genesys purchase very much reminds me of some other telecom equipment giant move, but it escapes me now. Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)

Steve and/or Thread- Were you able to find a Q4CC replay number? I thought I caught a small blurb yesterday where they actually held a CC for US analysts. I'm hoping it's available for replay or archieved on the web somewhere. Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)

I'll tell ya, these ALA options MM's are crooked. I've had an order in to sell the last of my FEB 40's at 10.5. The stock has been bidding 50 3/4 for 10 minutes and they're not filling it. Oh well, if it doesn't fill will probably serve them right as it looks like it's going higher yet! FWIW, I wouldn't have tried selling them if I didn't hold a fair amount of stock.

Another strong close, more bullish block trading and another decent volume day. If no nasty events surface over the weekend, I think it may be headed for 55 next week.

Again, congrats to all longs!
