Mike,

1) HDR is much faster than 1X.

HDR will be 2.4Mbps. Phase one of 1X will be 144kbps, and phase 2 will be 2Mbps. So, yes HDR will be faster than 1X.

2) 1X does data and voice.

I believe so. It doubles voice capacity.

3) HDR does data only.

I believe so, too.

4) There is no huge need for data and voice over the same spectrum.

As I understand it, IJ said something to the effect that because of the way HDR works, it would not be efficient to have both on the same spectrum. HDR works on high burst data rate (not continuous), which is not suitable for voice comms where it is better for comms to be continuous.

5) Therefore, HDR will ultimately be much more important to the adoption of CDMA than 1X.

Yes, but it just goes to reinforce the point that CDMA would still improve voice capacity.

Hope this helps, though I am sure someone else could have a go at explaining it better.

JMHO.

Ma.

Mike,

If it would help to review ASIC capabilities as they relate to HDR and 1X, here's what I have on my notes:

MSM4500 - HDR, IS95-A/B - 4Q00 samples, 1Q01 production

MSM5000 - 1X - Recent news has detailed availability...

MSM5500 - HDR, 1X - 2Q01 samples, 3Q01 production

As it relates to your question, it appears a phone with 1X and HDR is still a ways off, so to receive the 1X capacity expansion, carriers will be standardizing on the MSM5000. It sounds like this is the case in the US.
