Most non commercial lighting today is still done using incandescent bulbs, an idea dating back a hundred years or so. It's time for technology to give us something better. Are LED the answer??? Do they have future uses that haven't been explored because white wasn't available? Can they be made substantially larger than they are today? Does the SiC substrate mean that the LED could be made larger without as much problem with over heating? Any ideas or comments Fatboy? I sense something potentially big in CREE - more than just your average small high tech company.

i have seen a 60w equivalent LED light bulb. 110v. looked like a normal bulb.

Most of the blue LEDs emit some light in the near UV. Some have they spectrum shifted more towards the UV than others.

In essence the "white leds" are acting just like a fluorescent light in that the phosphors are activated by higher energy light permitting them to emit the lower energy light (red-green).

Actually SiC substrate means that the LED can be made smaller. This improves the economics for making the LED's cheap enough to compete with today's lighting technology. Also by placing more smaller leds in the same volume, it will be easier to get brighter lights.

The heat issue is not much of a factor for most LEDs. In fact the low heat emission is one of the major advantages of LED over incandescent lamps which typically produce far more heat than visible light.
