No end in sight to US inflation cycle upturn-ECRI
biz.yahoo.com

NEW YORK, Feb 4 (Reuters) - The Economic Cycle Research Institute's (ECRI) January U.S. future inflation gauge (FIG) pushed further upward after hitting a five-year high in December, the Institute said on Friday.

The January FIG rose to 123.1 from an upwardly revised 121.7 in December. The annualized growth rate also rose to 16.9 percent in January from 16.2 percent in December.

``Underlying inflationary pressures rose sharply in the closing months of the year, and continued to rise in January,' the report said. ``As yet, there is not end in sight to the current inflation cycle upturn.'

The gauge was boosted by faster growth in real estate loans and employment, though this was offset somewhat by slower growth in industrial materials prices, wider yield spreads and a fall in the percentage of purchasing managers reporting slower deliveries.

The FIG is designed to anticipate cyclical turning points in the rate of inflation.
