Speculators rule: Friday February 4, 10:35 am Eastern Time Mannesmann CEO-speculators helped push agreed deal DUESSELDORF, Germany, Feb 4 (Reuters) - Mannesmann AG Chief Executive Klaus Esser said on Friday that speculators contributed significantly to the company's decision to agree a merger with Vodafone AirTouch Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L). When asked by reporters if stock market arbitrageurs swung the balance in the deal, Esser said: ''They have contributed to this significantly.'' The two companies on Thursday agreed an offer valued at around 180 billion euros and giving Mannesmann shareholders a 49.5 percent stake in a merged group.
