Belgian Equity Preview: Ariane II, Bekaert, Iris, Union Miniere By Adrian Cox and Thomas Mulier Brussels, Feb. 4 (Bloomberg) -- The following shares are likely to make significant gains or losses Monday in Belgium. The stock symbol is in parentheses after the company name. The prices are from today's close. Belgian stocks rose for a third day today. UCB SA gained after Belgium's second-largest pharmaceutical and chemical company said 1999 profit rose 34 percent on sales of its Zyrtec anti- allergy drug. The Bel20 Index rose 35.73 points, or 1.2 percent, to 2924.13 today. Fifteen stocks gained, three declined and two remained unchanged. Ariane II SA (ARI BB): Shares of the computer-services company could be active after the stock wasn't allowed to trade on the Brussels stock exchange on the first day it was listed because bids for the Belgian computer-services company's shares rose above trading limits amid enthusiasm over computer-related stocks. The original price was 28 euros. Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL ES): The computer maker is one of five stocks listed on New York's Nasdaq index which will begin trading on Easdaq. The others are E*Trade Group Inc. (EGRP ES), the second-largest online broker; Network Associates Inc. (NETA ES), which makes network security and management software; Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM ES), which makes wireless phones and the chips that run them; and Xeikon NV (XEIK ES), a maker of digital printers. Bekaert NV (BEK BB): The largest maker of steel cord for tires said it will propose Baron Paul Buysse of Rolls-Royce Plc's Vickers Plc unit as its chairman at its annual general meeting May 10. Thierry Verhaeghe de Naeyer, the current chairman, will remain on the company's board of directors. The stock fell 1.23 euros, or 2.4 percent, to 49.22. Iris Group SA (IRI BB): The computer software company said Compaq Computer Corp., the largest maker of personal computers, will use Iris software in its new multipurpose computer printer. Iris rose 0.10 euro, or 0.3 percent, to 40. Union Miniere SA (UM BB): The zinc refiner is 25 percent- owned by Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux SA, a French utility which said it continues to support the company though its stake is ''not a strategic asset'' and could eventually be sold, a Suez Lyonnaise spokesman said. The comments came after Union Miniere estimated 1999 profit will beat its previous forecast. Its shares rose 1.75 euros, or 5.1 percent, to 36.25.
