Placer Dome (PDG) versus Gold Fields (GOLD) over Western Areas' stake in the rich South Deep mine.-

"Gold Fields chairman Chris Thompson says the group has "filed away" its interest in buying Western Areas Limited's stake in the South Deep mine owing to reluctance by Placer Dome to allow its pre-emptive right over the mine to lapse. However, the group ... says it has been circling Joel, a Free State mine currently owned by Anglogold. Analysts said the mine, contiguous with Gold Fields's Beatrix operation, offered certain synergies. It had never fitted well into the Anglogold group..."
