Robertson Stephens Raises Estimates, Reiterates Buy Rating on AMKR

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 4, 2000--Robertson Stephens Managing Director and Senior Semiconductor Equipment Analyst Sue Billat today raised estimates and reiterated her Buy rating on Amkor Technology, Inc., after the company reported strong fourth quarter results. Amkor is a provider of semiconductor packaging and test services.

``Amkor's fourth quarter earnings results beat our and the Street's expectations. We believe that Amkor is off to a strong start in the first quarter, normally a soft quarter in prior years, and the company's outlook for 2000 continues to strengthen, as outsourcing increases and capacity remains tight. As a result, we are raising our 2000 earnings-per-share estimate to $1.24, from $1.15, and are reiterating our Buy rating on the stock,' said Billat.

Two re-iterations in a day, stock up 1 3/8 (i.e. not huge), but I guess a lot of the expectations were priced into the stock the last few days.

Amkor, Suppliers Tackle Testing Bottlenecks for 5-GHz Chip Package

Semiconductor Business News
(02/04/00, 08:58:56 AM EDT)

CHANDLER, Ariz.--Amkor Technology Inc. said a joint effort between its engineers and three suppliers of device handlers, sockets, and test contactors has resulted in MicroLeadFrame chip packages that are being tested in volume for 5-GHz device frequencies.

Amkor rolled out the MicroLeadFrame package in the second quarter of 1999 and then quickly began adding production capacity for cellular phone applications (see Oct. 5 story). But the challenge in testing was keeping cost in line with the stringent requirements of high-frequency measurements in small surface-mount packages at high volumes, said Amkor this week.

To meet those testing requirements, Amkor said it worked with test contactor maker PrimeYield Systems Inc. in St Paul, Minn., socket specialists Plastronics Inc. of Irving, Tex., and device-handler maker Micro Component Technology Inc. of St Paul, Minn.

Amkor said PrimeYield provided test contactors that reduced the length of tester wiring for probe package I/O leads with low pin inductance at high-frequency measurements. Plastronics developed sockets for the MicroLeadFrame package for burn-in and qualification testing. MCT supplied its new MCT5115 chip-scale handler, which was capable of achieving "Sprint-speed" throughputs of 8,000 units per hour.

The 5-GHz speeds will enable the MicroLeadFrame to handle a range of wireless applications, including the upcoming Bluetooth links for computing and portable devices, said Amkor.
