Challenges for dot com companies

04-02-2000 21:45:18 (IIL)

Low personal computers penetration and lower traffic on the Internet are the two big challenges for the Indian Internet entrepreneur, said Ajit Balakrishnan, Managing Director Rediff Communications. Speaking at the Nasscom 2000@India conference on `Challenges for dot com companies`, he said, Indian net companies need to rev up their revenues to at least US$30mn to achieve a market capitalization of US$20bn. He said that the size of the Indian market is very small and needs to be increased very fast to a level of 30mn to 50mn net users. This would be possible only if the content on the sites was increased and improved dramatically.

Balakrishnan visualized that in the coming month or two, the Internet access charges would come down to zero, which would then help a large number of users to access the net. To be a successful net company, Balakrishnan opined, the company should aim for 50% gross margin as the market place is highly competitive.

Bhana Grover, managing director of Chaitimes.com, reminded the wannabe net-entrepreneurs to keep their passion high all along. It is also important to empower every member of the team, as things were changing very fast, she added. "Having talented people is not enough, you have to retain them and ensure that the chemistry between all members works fine. As you grow bigger, its is important that you develop flexible procedures and ensure that every member of the team maintains its entrepreneurial instinct, " she said. She also suggested that it would help to talk to companies that have failed so that the same mistakes are not repeated.
