Tony, I'm pretty sure that AMD was planning for their x86-64 extensions well before they made their plans public via foils. Everyone knew that Intel was planning IA-64 for quite a while, including AMD. And AMD decided that 64-bit extensions is a path not taken, so they went for it.

Unfortunately, AMD's upcoming Sledgehammer will probably arrive at the same time as Intel's McKinley. And in my opinion, that's a little too late for AMD, especially if they want to build up a software base for their x86-64 extensions.
