What global standard are they talking about???? Answer (IMHO): QCOM, toll gate to the wireless worldtrading.etrade.com 10:34 ET ****** Bell Atlantic: (BEL) 59 1/16 +5/8: Why is the Mannesmann-Vodafone merger a good thing for Bell Atlantic? From a tactical standpoint, right now, it doesn't affect Bell Atlantic much. But from a long term strategic perspective, the Mannesmann-Vodafone (VOD) deal is very positive for Bell Atlantic. This isn't obvious on first glance, but here is the thinking. First of all, Vodafone becomes stronger. Mannesmann the conglomerate has some "old world" businesses, but it has a lot of capital and distribution, and a stronger telecom customer base. This deal is primarily about Mannesmann's wireless telecom group. With this merger, Vodafone just moved up, in a big way, as a stronger competitor for wireless customers. The markets realize this, as well, as other European wireless companies have moved up in price on European markets. Wireless in Europe may actually grow faster than in the US, because there is no such thing as a free local phone call in Europe. You may as well start making all your caflls on the wireless phone. In the US, Bell Atlantic and Vodafone/Airtouch are partners in a wireless joint venture. So anytime your partner gets stronger, that's a good thing. But more critically, with the coming of third generation (3G) phone technologies, one-phone-one-world becomes possible. At that point, a Bell Atlantic travelling customer becomes a Vodafone customer. When phones become internet access devices, the global traveller becomes a Bell Atlantic/Vodafone customer for multiple services. No other RBOC has the potential global possibilities that Bell Atlantic does now, and while that advantage doesn't mean much today, it may mean more later. Any frequent reader of the Story Stock pages knows that we like Bell Atlantic, largely because it is valued as a blue-chip growth and income stock, which is not exactly in favor right now, but it is starting to act like a growth company, with an aggressive edge. Although today's finalization of the Mannesmann-Vodafone deal don't really accrue any immediate benefits to Bell Atlantic, from a strategic perspective, it makes Vodafone an even better joint-venture partner for Bell Atlantic, and that's good for BEL. - RVG
