Mike, if I remember correctly, AMD will extend x86 to 64-bit just like Intel extended x86 to 32-bit back in the 386 processor. The registers will be widened from 32 to 64 bits. I don't think AMD can do what Motorola did and manipulate two registers as one. The x86 architecture doesn't have enough registers to make this practical. (And I don't think AMD is going to add more.)

AMD will also revise the x86 floating-point architecture and turn the stack-based FP register file into a flat model. They're hoping that along with their other enhancements, they can overcome x86's tradionally weak floating-point performance relative to the RISC processors.
