Toronto--Feb 4--A Canadian analyst told Bridge he expected Barrick Gold Corp.
next week to announce it will suspend its hedging program for 2000, on the
tails of Placer Dome Inc.'s announcement to limit its hedging activities. While
Barrick spokesman Vince Borg said the outlook for the gold market was positive,
he declined to comment on the company's future gold hedging plans. By Daniel

Moscow--Feb 4--Russia's acting president, Vladimir Putin, has not yet signed
platinum export quotas due to government red tape, an official with Russia's

New York--Feb 4--Gold futures surged 8.0%, storming to the highest level since
mid-October in heavy volume. Canadian gold mine Placer Dome's announcement that
it would suspend its hedging activities and cut back gold hedges this year by 2
million ounces triggered a speculative buying spree that sent the already
frenzied market higher. Silver jumped 5.4%, also visiting mid-October levels. By
