Jim -
the most optimistic valuations for an AV IPO at that time were about $2B... I don't know if that's "through the roof" but it is about 1/3 of the value that CPQ actually got.

I think the difference is in the impact of CPQ share price, and the perception of CPQ as an internet company - victor's point - rather than the actual value of an IPO...

Jim.. you are correct IMO. Another cpq screw up in dumping AV. The time that has past has allowed others to overtake them. AV was running behind Yahoo but had a strong chance of becoming and maintaining #2 or #3. Those that research looked at it 1st. Now another (www.northernlight.com) is ahead of them on research. They do a great job of breaking all the items found and putting it into folders by classification. Had I known they were going to give AV away I would not have bought CPQ in the first place. The only possible good of it now is they are able to sell AV and CMGI before the valuations fall. Possibly they can put that cash to work in some manner that makes WS excited instead of having a 'so-so' attitude about it. 3cents a qtr added to the EPS is no big deal,,, but this is a dead issue and was a bullet into the cpq valuation.....

The stock ran up on assumptions of synergy as a result of the DEC purchase. AV was a sidelight.
You may THINK AV is a premiere portal, but the #'s speak different. It is, by a long shot, not even close.

It didn't run up in anticipation of an AV ipo. It ran up because we thought that it had finished digesting DEC and that it was going to start growing again and report good and increasing earnings for the next few years.

Then they reported a loss and fired EP. BOOM. Stock tanks. Maybe were ging to get that rosy future now.
