GTE is notoriously pathetic on service. It is so bad.... not sure how they manage to stay in business. I've read several big time reports about them & their service. It was even mentioned during their merger activity, but it somehow didn't seem to matter. Had friends that personally experienced the same problems you are having. That's one RBOC merger i wouldn't get near. Sorry you had to experience 1st hand

Peter, I checked out DSLReports.com last September when I thought about getting DSL. Covad was the only company with the bandwidth <GG> to answer my phone calls and e-mails. I finally decided get a cable modem -- no installation charge, no equipment charge. It is very fast and when/if the cable system slows down in my neighborhood, perhaps DSL suppliers/installers will have their act together.

I'm not sure why all the apostrophes and quotation marks I carefully placed in my ranting turned into question marks, but it makes it look a bit strange and also makes it hard to read. Sorry. Maybe I should just get a cable modem.

Harmonic partners Irdeto for IP security

Harmonic Data Systems is working with Irdeto Access to incorporate its IT scrambling conditional access security to work with the HDS CyberStream high-speed Internet access system. This will enable encrypted high-speed delivery of IP Multicast content via satellite to allow CyberStream customers to implement IP data broadcasting services with complete security.

Irdeto Access, a Mindport conditional access company, developed the IP scrambling system to service the growing demand for the distribution from one to many of data, video and audio content using the IP Multicast protocol. The system includes an IP encryptor installed at the data gateway, at the satellite uplink, which addresses a corresponding software decryptor and smart card reader incorporated into the user's receiver device. Irdeto Access IP scrambling system-enabled CyberStream end-user devices include the SAT1 PC/PCI for the consumer market.

A separate IP scrambling system software module controls the IP data encryption and subscriber access as well as providing a TCP/IP based interface for optional external Subscriber Management Systems. Using IP scrambling, subscriber access control messages are sent as IP packets alongside the IP scrambled payload data to end users, all on one MPEG-2 DVB transport stream.

"This cooperation between Harmonic Data Systems and Irdeto Access addresses a primary market need, that of creating secure delivery of multicast content over high speed links," said Michiel Willemsen, VP of marketing and sales, Irdeto Access. "An end-to-end IP Multicasting solution that boasts advanced conditional access controls, such as CyberStream and our IP scrambling technology, has to be a winning proposition."

The Irdeto Access architecture can transmit up to 100 IP Multicast streams today and even more in the near future. "The IP scrambling conditional access system is one we are extremely pleased to be supporting in our CyberStream end-to-end system," said David Price, Harmonic Data Systems' vice president of business development. "The partnership with Irdeto Access will deliver even greater power and control to our CyberStream customers, particularly those offering secure file distribution and VPN services."
