Back to the silver dilemma. Your miracle answer works, Christopher!!

I tried it on my big old complicated silver pieces -- and so help me, it worked! The only problem was that I did not have any glass or plastic container deep enough, so that I could not get the patina off every spot. Tomorrow I will go to the store and buy myself a big plastic pail and loads and loads of aluminum foil.

The old candlestick was the worst: it had become completely black. The patina stuff gets all gooey in the soda water -- ugh! What IS that patina made of, anyway? And interesting: why does the water STINK so when the stuff begins to come off? Hmm...
