Tony, <Middle America blue collar workers are exactly the ones that won't do that, because they'll tend to be very brand conscious, meaning Intel.>

Like I said on the AMD thread, now that Ford is giving Intel-based PCs to their employees, AMD-based PCs should be MUCH more abundant on the retail shelves! Watch for even further price drops on a demand-limited Athlon. And watch the AMDroids post even more reports of discount sales on Athlons ...

Then again, speaking of brand consciousness, have you seen the new Gateway commercials, the ones which proudly announce their adoption of the AMD Athlon processor? Man, you think Gateway is peeved at Intel or what?

Now that Gateway is a happy Athlon customer, maybe Intel will decide that Gateway doesn't need high-speed Pentium IIIs as much as other customers, like Dell for instance. Come to think of it, maybe Intel will decide that Gateway won't want first dibs on Willamette later this year, either.

I'm sure that K6-2s would do just fine. OTOH, since the computers are basically free I wonder if Otellini will use this a an indication the people accept Intel cpu registration id. <G>
As a Ford stock holder, this episode is yet another reason why Fords stock and profits can't move up.

Tony,

I don't blame them as in this case it does make a difference where compatibility can force you software to not run on AMD machines. This would have been fine on AMD 486 chip, after have gone to clean room version the implementation details of the cpus have changed between intel & amd.
