Nice company Ciena keeps in this fund...(JDSU, SDLI, RBAK, etc.)

>>The PBHG Technology & Communications fund, like most technology funds in 1999, had a good year. Actually, it had an awesome year, as the fund was up a sizzling 243 percent!

The funds manager, Jeff Wrona, is not surprised with the current weakness in the technology sector. He believes it could continue over the next several weeks. Jeff believes that first-quarter technology earnings will be "pretty darn good" and should help stabilize the tech sector.

Jeff likes to buy companies that are experiencing positive business momentum. "We ask ourselves one simple question: Are the business conditions for this particular company getting better, worse or staying the same from where it was a week or quarter ago?" he says. "If things are getting better for the company, then we are buyers of the stock because they are experiencing positive business momentum. If they are getting weaker, then we are sellers of the stock. If things are neither positive nor negative for a specific business, we will hold on to that company but will look for a better replacement for that particular stock." About 60 percent of his funds portfolio is invested in Internet-related stocks "because a lot of business momentum is attached to them."

His other favorite B2B holdings are: Ariba (ARBA 175 1/8), Commerce One (CMRC 169), Art Technology Group (ARTG 124 1/4), Interwoven (IWOV 136 1/2), BEA Systems (BEAS 85), New Era of Networks (NEON 59 1/2) and i2 Technologies (ITWO 256 3/8). Wrona states that all of those firms are software vendors that provide a variety of niches in the B2B world.

One positive theme Jeff is bullish on is the telecom equipment space, especially those companies specializing in optics. Cisco (CSCO 117 7/8) is one company he likes that is moving into that space. It has acquired three companies in the optical area. Other companies he favors include: JDS Uniphase (JDSU 215 7/8), SDL Inc. (SDLI 299 1/2), Sycamore Networks (SCMR 308 7/8),**** Ciena (CIEN 75 1/2)****, MRV Communications (MRVC 72 1/2) and Redback Networks (RBAK 192 5/8).<<
