Another thought reason takeover - would there be any rationale for a different perspective - buyout by a company like Tyco (recent rumblings they may get involved in fiberoptics - details not clear to me) - buyout by a conglomerate. Or even a company like enron that owns the right of way - not clear to me that they would have any motivations in this area. Remember that corning did start as a dish and glass company.

Another name is MRVC, more of a CMGI of the fibre optics industy. You might want to take a look at that one.

The names mentioned in that ML conference by the CEO of JDSU were ORTEL/ETEK/SDLI as competitors to JDSU.

CIENA is more of a competitor to Lucent and NT to the best of my knowledge. It would probably be classified as a "systems" company with possibly inhouse component manufacturing capabilities like NT or LU. I remember when LU warned, there was talk of CIENA possibly taking advantage of the situation.
Maybe Ciena is now a great takeover target. ( remember the Tellabs/Ciena deal falling apart a while back).

I don't think there are many independent component makers like JDSU/SDLI/GLW/ETEK. I heard of another name OPTX but i don't believe it is a direct competitor. If they are in optical coating (i think), they could be a good takeover target considering that JDSU had taken over OCLI.

>>Also anybody with any current opinion on Ciena?<<

While I mostly only post links and try to keep my opinions away from public forums, I couldn't help but see your question and would like to respond not in a cheerleader fashion, but more in the vein of encouraging you to do some more research into Ciena....I think you will find that the company has changed quite a bit from the small "old line" DWDM player with only a few customers that is was during the Tellabs debacle. With the acquisitions of Lightera and Omnia it has transformed itself into much more than its former self with a variety of customers both domestic and international. For a list of its customers...

And an interesting recent press release...

ciena.com

Mind you, I am not going to say Ciena is a Nortel or a Cisco, but with this sector taking off, it still may be worth a look... or two... Cheers
