Startups push optical networks toward last mile

WASHINGTON : Optical networking crept closer to the so-called last mile of the network in recent weeks, as a pair of startups announced plans to bring fiber optics nearer to customer premises.
Terawave Communications Inc. came out of stealth mode on Wednesday (Feb. 3) with the news that it had snared $35 million in a second round of venture funding. The company says it will develop an optical access system, called Intelligent Dense Wave Multiplexing, based on a passive optical network (PON) scheme. Snip....
